Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF) has been known as one of themost effective and robust ways to remove suspendedsolids, biochemical oxygen demand, fats, oils and grease,phosphorus or nutrients from industrial wastewaters.Nijhuis has provided more than 4000 Dissolved Air Flotationsystems around the world in a variety of industriesincluding; food and beverage production, dairy processing,meat processing, agricultural, oil and gas and municipalmarkets to just name a few.DAF units are often preceded by a flocculator or mixingtank with a chemical dosing unit. These systems addcoagulant and flocculant to the water to increase theremoval rates in the DAF. While many traditionalcoagulants and flocculants are applied, a transition is on itsway towards more green chemicals. Nijhuis is active in thisdevelopment, as it fits with our aim to protect resourcesand to minimize the impact that our business activitieshave on the water and soil.

YOUR GOAL The goal of this internship is to investigate the applicationof green chemicals in primary wastewater treatment.During this internship you will perform a technical andeconomic study to determine the feasibility of usingdifferent green chemicals in different industries. You willconduct a series of laboratory experiments as part of thetechnical study, while a CO2 reduction analysis scan shouldbe executed as part of the economic evaluation.

Working in NSI will give you the space to grow in a specific topic and find out how a big organization works with very different departments and disciplines for one final goal: To implement optimal Water technology solutions for different industries!

Internship available from September 2024 onwards.


  • BSc or MSc Chemical, (Bio)Process or Environmental Engineering.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Flexibility and indepence.
  • Professional command of the English language in words and writing. Command of the Dutch language is desirable, but not required.

    As an intern from the Technology & Innovation department, you will take on challenging and important projects along with Process Design Engineers and R&D engineers. You will run a project with your supervisor and a larger team located in Doetinchem and/or other locations (if applicable).
